Haunted Mansions

The centerpiece of your battlefield, this abandoned building could have cracked walls, broken windows, and a roof that’s caved in over the years.

- Cut out pieces of foamboard to form the walls, floors, and roof of your mansion. Make the structure look aged by cutting jagged edges into the walls or leaving gaps for crumbled sections.

- Use craft wood or matchsticks to create wooden beams or doors. Glue them onto your foamboard structure.

- For roofing, cut small rectangular pieces of cardboard to create shingles and glue them onto the roof structure. Overlap them to give a realistic effect.

- Apply a textured paint or mix sand into your paint to give the mansion walls a weathered look.

- Paint the mansion in dull, muted colors. Use gray for the walls, brown for the wood, and black for the roof. Add washes of darker shades to create shadows and depth, especially in cracks and broken areas.

Creepy Forest

Twisted, dead trees reaching toward the sky, with scattered undergrowth and vines clinging to them... Lets create them!

- Take twigs or bend wire to form tree trunks. Twist them into unnatural shapes to give them a gnarled, haunted look.

- Apply clump foliage or lichen to create sparse leaves, giving the impression of dying or cursed trees.

- Sculpt roots out of green stuff or modeling clay and add them to the base of the trees for extra realism.

- Paint the trees in dark, muted shades of brown and black. Dry brush lighter shades to highlight the twisted bark and branches.

- Add green and brown washes to the base to simulate moss and grime. You can also sprinkle fine sand or flock on the base to represent dead leaves.

Graveyard

Rows of decrepit tombstones, overgrown pathways, and an ominous mausoleum in the center will add another level of spooky to the terrain.

- Cut small rectangular shapes from foamboard for gravestones. Carve cracks, chips, or even names into the stones using a hobby knife for added detail.

- Build a mausoleum using larger foamboard pieces. Add pillars or columns using craft sticks to create an ancient, crumbling look.

- Scatter bones, skulls, or broken crosses around the graveyard for added creepiness.

- Paint the gravestones and mausoleum in shades of gray with dark washes to highlight cracks and weathering.

- Dry brush a lighter gray on raised surfaces to create depth. Add green or brown washes near the base to suggest moss or mildew.

- Use flock or static grass to create overgrown areas and scatter tiny pebbles or rocks to break up the monotony of the ground.

Add some Finishing Touches!

Now that your basic terrain is complete, it’s time to add Halloween-themed details to bring your haunted battlefield to life!

- Spider Webs: Stretch cotton or use Halloween webbing to add spider webs in corners of the haunted mansion or between the trees in the creepy forest.

- Pumpkins and Tombstones: Add small pumpkins, skulls, or tombstones from Halloween decorations to give your battlefield an extra spooky flair.

- Fog or Mist Effects: Use cotton batting or polyfill to create fog or mist creeping through the forest or around the graveyard. This adds a chilling atmosphere to your games.

- Glow-in-the-Dark Paint: For an extra spooky effect, consider using glow-in-the-dark paint on windows, eyes, or other small details to create an eerie glow in dim lighting.

Once you’ve completed your terrain, it’s important to seal it to protect your hard work. Use a matte varnish spray to seal the paint and prevent chipping. This step will ensure that your Halloween-themed terrain pieces will last through many gaming sessions.
